If you think that the people pictured above are ladies, then I am very sorry. These are men, cladding in women’s clothes. Cross-dressing has been the trend of the day. One is Eric Omondi, a Kenyan comedian who attended an event dressed in Ladies’ clothes. The other one is tiktoker and an influencer by the name of Kelvin Kinuthia who does tiktok videos in women’s clothing. What does Bible say about these things?
Cross-dressing is a controversial topic and one that has been argued over for centuries. Some believe it is a sin while others believe it is an expression of one’s identity. The Bible has some scriptures that may provide guidance here, so let’s take a look at what it says about cross-dressing. We’ll explore what various passages have to say, and discuss whether these scriptures are still applicable in modern times.
Bible verses that mention cross-dressing
As the world continues the embrace LGBTQ+ lifestyles, it is important to look what does Bible say about these issues. The Bible has not left us in darkness to do as we please but God has graciously given us His word which is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for [a]instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
The Bible has quite a bit to say about cross dressing! Here are some of the most relevant verses:
“A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.” – Deuteronomy 22:5
“The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.” – Leviticus 18:22
These verses make it clear that cross dressing is an abomination in the eyes of God. It is something that should not be done by His people. If you are a Christian, you should not clad in clothes belonging to opposite gender.
The history of cross-dressing
Prior to the mid-19th century, there was little mention of cross-dressing in Western literature. The first recorded instance of cross-dressing in England occurred in the year 1290, when a woman named WalterMap was discovered to have been masquerading as a man. In the centuries that followed, there were sporadic reports of women who dressed as men, but it was not until the Victorian era that cross-dressing became more widespread.
During the Victorian era, cross-dressing was often used as a means of escape from the constrictions of female society. Women who cross-dressed were able to explore areas of life that were typically off limits to them, such as bars and taverns. Cross-dressing also allowed women to work in male-dominated occupations, such as journalism and medicine.
The rise of the suffragette movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries saw an increase in the number of women who cross-dressed in order to campaign for female equality. In 1909, British suffragette Christabel Pankhurst was arrested for impersonating a man while attempting to enter the House of Commons. Pankhurst and her fellow suffragettes continued to dress as men during their campaigns, using their masculine clothing as a symbol of their fight for gender equality.
Today, cross-dressing is no longer considered taboo. It is worrying even to see how it is celebrated today. In Kenya, there have been an increasing number of men appearing in public spaces in ‘s clothes. There is even a content creator who does tiktok videos flaunting in dresses, and wigs and applying makeup on the face.
Should Christians wear clothes of the opposite Gender?
Before I state if we should or not, it is important to note that Christians are guided by scripture. The Bible is not a buffet where you can select the parts you like and leave the parts you don’t like. As we have seen that God in Old Testament forbade men and women the clothes of the opposite gender to appear like the other. Someone may ask why God forbid it. Because it is an abomination to the Lord.
This is not talking about wearing pants. In the Old Testament, there were no pants. What scripture basically is prohibiting is men trying to appear like women and women like men. It is important to note that God forbids any activity that tries to put out the gender distinctions which God has put into place. You can differentiate between a lady and a man even when they are wearing trousers. It is also important to note what Bible talks about modesty.
What about those who wear them for fun? Well, God forbid that too. God never cared about the reason you may have to wear clothes of the opposite gender. To God, that’s an abomination. There are many people who do things for clout chasing, gain fame and money but a true Christian will always engage in those things which will glorify God.
You cannot come to Jesus with the ‘My Dress My Choice’ mentality. Christ is the Lord and you must be willing to become His slave. Now, the slave does the will of the master and not his own will.
Conclusion
As we have seen, God forbids cross-dressing and therefore it is a sin to practice that which is an abomination to the Lord.
