Saying Jesus Loves You to a person whom you are evangelizing to may sound like a good idea. After all, everybody wants some love, right? What if you just tell a person, Jesus loves them, He has a wonderful plan for their life, and is knocking on the door of their heart to be let in? Of course, they will be happy and they will accept and welcome him in their heart. That sounds like a good gospel message that might meet less resistance.
While it may seem good and may even bring out some numbers to church, telling people who have no idea of who Jesus is will not make sense to them all. Just imagine coming up to you and telling you that Jesus loves you. Either you will be like, “that’s cool,” or you will be shocked and left with the question, “so what?”
Telling sinners of God’s love alone is giving them half-truth of God’s character. As we share the good news, we must speak of the bad news; That we are sinners before a Holy and Just God and therefore we deserve wrath- Eternal punishment in Hell. Before men can see their sinfulness and the Holiness of God, the gospel will not make sense.
Telling people that Jesus loves them will lead them to wrong conclusions. Suppose they are engaging in something sinful? They will continue indulging in the deeds of the flesh. Telling unregenerate that Jesus loves them will make them that God loves them no matter what they do. The result is that they will continue sinning believing that God will not send them to heaven because of their sin because He loves them. Others may even mock God in the way George Carlin did here.
Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there’s an invisible man living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever till the end of time… But he loves you!
George Carlin
Someone may jump to John 3:16 and say that God loves everyone claiming that is the reason God sent His only begotten Son Jesus Christ to save us. But that saving love is only understood in Christ Jesus. Outside Christ Jesus, we are sinners under the wrath of God. John 3:18 says that those who have not believed are condemned already.
