NAIROBI, KENYA. A Controversial Megachurch pastor Ng’ang’a, recently slapped a church member during a church service, according to the viral video. Pastor is seen walking towards the first row where he slaps a man in his late 40s who was dozing during the church service.
“Hii Kenya iko na mambo mingi sana, amka!” (“This Kenya has too many problems—wake up!”), he exclaims before striking the man and ordering him to move to the back of the church, visibly upsetting him.
Ng’ang’a then turns to a woman seated beside the man, scolding her for failing to intervene. “Na wewe kwa nini analala hapa na unamwona?” (“And you, why is he sleeping here while you’re just watching?”), He demands.
The video sparked public outrage online, with many people calling out the Neno Evangelism lead pastor to issue a public apology. This is not the first time the prominent Nairobi preacher has been under fire. Previously, he has been called out for selling pieces of torn paper to his members, claiming they had the power to give them money.
Pastor Ng’ang’a is known for abusing his church members, using foul language while preaching, sometimes mixing kikamba and kikuyu and beating his supposed demon-possessed congregants in prayers.
The abuse of pastoral position in the Kenyan church has been rampant in recent times, with pastors being treated with respect and fear by the faithful. The biblical illiteracy among the professing believers is also a major contributor to the abuse believers suffer at the hands of the so-called pastors.
Jesus in Matthew said that not everyone who calls Jesus Lord, Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of the Father who is in Heaven. Jesus added that we shall know them by their fruits. A good tree cannot give bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot give good fruit.
While false teachers come to us looking like sheep, they are inwardly ravenous wolves. How many people who claim to be pastors in Kenya take advantage of the poor, the vulnerable, and those suffering for their own benefit? They solicit money from the poor, preaching the prosperity gospel—a lie that if you give money to their ministry, then God will give you wealth and wealth.
Biblical Warning Against False Teachers
For as I have often told you before, and now say again even with tears: Many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and their glory is in their shame. Their minds are set on earthly things. Philippians 2:18-19
For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery, they deceive the hearts of the naive. Romans 16:18
These men are like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be captured and destroyed. They blaspheme in matters they do not understand, and like such creatures, they too will be destroyed. The harm they will suffer is the wages of their wickedness. They consider it a pleasure to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deception as they feast with you. Their eyes are full of adultery; their desire for sin is never satisfied; they seduce the unstable. They are accursed children with hearts trained in greed. 2 Peter 2:12-14
Now there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow in their depravity, and because of them, the way of truth will be defamed. In their greed, these false teachers will exploit you with deceptive words. The longstanding verdict against them remains in force, and their destruction does not sleep. 2 Peter 2:1-3
