There is a old game of blame shifting in which every child of Adam is talented in. Ironically, it is no longer a game because it has been so common to the human being. It involves avoiding the responsibility of your action but passing it to someone else. Have you ever engaged in it? In Genesis chapter 3, after Adam and Eve eating the fruit from the tree they had been commanded not to eat from, God called Adam and asks him where he was. Adam and his wife were hiding because of shame. When Adam was asked if they had eaten from the tree they were commanded not to eat from, Adam responds saying, “the woman whom You gave to be with me, gave me of the tree and I ate” verse 12.
The answer to the question could have been yes, but Adam in someway is like he is shifting the blame on him to his wife. After all, Adam was the leader nevertheless. When Eve is asked, why she did that, she says, “the serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
We have inherited the fallen nature of our first parents. We naturally shrink from taking responsibility for our actions and instead try to justify our deeds. I saw a story going around of a man who murdered his girlfriend for being with another man. Whoever posted it captioned the words, “mtapata discipline” (you (ladies) will get disciplined). I just wondered how would anyone justify taking one’s life over someone being a cheater. Of course people would justify their sin on passing the blame on each other.
How many times do we see this sad state of things in the world? How much self-less love do we see in the world. There is none. World is full of pride, selfishness ( nowadays nicknamed selflove). When people sin and cast the blame on others.
What about in the church? We at times fail to love as Christ loves us. When we sin, we find ways to justify and cover up our sin based on the other party. We slander them as we build and clean our name. Why do our relationships get in a go-slows? Why do people start blaming each other when they are on fault? Even when both parties are on fault, do we not just feel that it is more on the other? May God help us.
We must learn to take full responsibility of our actions and repent of our sins without althoughs, buts etc. It is adding sin on sin to point fingers to other people for our sin. I should repent of my impatience with people without justifying it with how people treat me.
Like Adam and Eve, we can blame others for our sin but God will hold us responsible.
